Like most lakes in the Big Bend of Florida, Lake Cascade may suddenly dump into the underlying Floridan Aquifer via sinkholes. This is exacerbated in drought, such as the one ending in 2001. The upper lines on cypress trunks show that water levels are at least 3 m below normal.
